the Panama Canal
the Sahara Desert

3. Use the with plural islands, lakes, and mountains.

the Great Lakes
the Hawaiian Islands
the Rocky Mountains

3. Do not use the with singular islands, lakes, and mountains.

Mount Hood
Lake Michigan
Maui

4. Use the in the names of universities that are in this format...the university of ______.

the University of Wyoming
the University of California
the University of Alabama

4. Generally do not use the when a university's name has this format...._______ university.

Idaho State University
Georgia State University

However, some universities like having the in their names to make them sound distinctive, so you will see

the Pennsylvania State University

5. Use the when referring to a national group of people.

the Italians
the Russians

5. Do not use the for the name of a language.

He speaks Italian.

However, use the if the word language is included in the phrase.

The Italian language is related to French and Spanish.
