The Mississippi River

The Mississippi River, also called the "Great River," is the longest river in the United States. The river originates at Lake Itasca in the state of Minnesota. The elevation in Minnesota is 1,670 feet above sea level. The river ends at the Gulf of Mexico where it discharges over half a million cubic feet of water in the Gulf of Mexico every second. The Mississippi River system is made up of the Mississippi River and hundreds of tributaries that feed into it. Major tributaries include the Missouri River, the Ohio River, the Arkansas River, and the Red River. The volume of water in the river increases as tributaries empty their water into the Great River from water drained off of more than 1,150,000 square miles in 31 states.
