Preface
The Instructor's Manual
Applied English Grammar

This Instructor's Manual accompanies Applied English Grammar. The manual basically includes answers to exercises in the text; however, it also includes a sample course syllabus as well as a section with teaching suggestions written by David Robinson, an instructor who participated in field testing the textbook.

Applied English Grammar is designed for the level that some programs designate as "high intermediate" or "advanced." These ESL students have achieved a relatively high level of skill at communication in English, but they are generally not ready to enter a full-time academic degree program in English. They need additional work with written English grammar and writing before they can be independent writers of academic English.

We hope you find Applied English Grammar a flexible text. It is not necessary for instructors to use all the exercises in the text, and several exercises are open-ended to stimulate class discussion. The sample course outline shows one way to combine the materials into a ten- week course, but individual teachers may find other combinations more useful for their particular students. If you find errors and puzzling answers, please communication with Pat Byrd at patbyrd@mindspring.com. Thanks for your help in making this Instructor's Manual as useful as possible.
